James 2:14-17 Using 14, 17

My friends, what good is it for one of you to say that you have faith if your actions do not prove it? Can that faith save you? Suppose there are brothers or sisters who need clothes and don't have enough to eat. What good is there in your saying to them, “God bless you! Keep warm and eat well!”—if you don't give them the necessities of life? So it is with faith: if it is alone and includes no actions, then it is dead.

Hermanos míos, ¿de qué le sirve a uno decir que tiene fe, si sus hechos no lo demuestran? ¿Podrá acaso salvarlo esa fe? Supongamos que a un hermano o a una hermana les falta la ropa y la comida necesarias para el día; si uno de ustedes les dice: «Que les vaya bien; abríguense y coman todo lo que quieran», pero no les da lo que su cuerpo necesita, ¿de qué les sirve? Así pasa con la fe: por sí sola, es decir, si no se demuestra con hechos, es una cosa muerta.

On this particular day the professor was talking about justification by faith through grace- an idea I knew but had never truly understood. As he spoke, I listened and took notes. Then I witnessed him walk away from his manuscript and gesture in my direction. He said, “When you understand that God chose for you to be saved and that you did not choose your own salvation, then you’ll understand God’s amazing grace.”

Ese día en particular, el profesor estaba hablando acerca de la justificación por la fe a través de la gracia, una idea que yo conocía, pero que nunca había entendido del todo. Mientras el profesor hablaba, yo tomaba apuntes. Entonces lo vi dejar de lado su manuscrito y hacer gestos en mi dirección. Dijo: “Cuando entiendas que Dios te eligió para darte la salvación y que tú no elegiste tu propia salvación, entonces entenderás también la gracia sublime de Dios.”
